U.S. presidential election, 2004 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The election marked the first time an incumbent president was reelected while his political party increased its numbers in both houses of Congress since Lyndon Johnson in the 1964 election.
The 2004 election was the first to be affected by the campaign finance reforms mandated by the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 (also known as the McCain-Feingold Bill for its sponsors in the United States Senate).
On October 5, the Vice Presidential debate was held between Dick Cheney and John Edwards in Cleveland, Ohio, and was moderated by Gwen Ifill of PBS.

On December 3 the Supreme Court declared the results of the runoff election to be invalid.
The presidential election held in November and December 2004 in Ukraine was mostly a political battle between Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych and former Prime Minister and opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko.
The United States government has also decided not to recognize the election, and has expressed dissatisfaction with the current situation—the outgoing US Secretary of State, Colin Powell, quite unequivocally stated that the result announced could not be accepted as legitimate by the United States.

Constitutional Topic: Presidential Campaigns - The U.S. Constitution Online - USConstitution.net
In essence, it is like a mini presidential election, in that the voters of the state decide which candidate their delegates to the party convention later in the year will vote for.
A presidential candidate must look at himself to determine where his weaknesses are, and choose a running mate who will, hopefully, flesh out the ticket and instill confidence in the voters that the administration will be balanced.
The original Constitution stated that the runner-up in the election for President would become Vice President.

National party conventions are held in late July or August before the fall presidential campaign to nominate the candidates for president and vice-president and approve the party platforms, each party's stated goals for the next four years.
Generally, a state presidential caucus is a multilayered system of meetings usually attracting only dedicated party members who elect delegates to represent them in the next stage of the election process.

As the Republican and Democratic nominees, Bush and Kerry each received $74.6 million in government funding for the general election.

Rice talks up free and fair elections in Central Asia / Opposition leaders say she doesn't go far enough
A senior State Department official, traveling with Rice, said he believed that the two presidents were oppressing the political opposition not because they feared losing an election but because "they are afraid of this spinning out of control," as happened in Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan, where popular uprisings overthrew longtime government leaders.
At every forum, Rice spoke of the need for "free and fair elections," but that was not enough for some opposition candidates in a part of the world where speaking out against the government, even during an election campaign, can prompt a beating or jail term.
Kazakhstan holds presidential elections in December, Tajikistan next year, and in both places the longtime leaders, who live and work in gilded, bespangled palaces they have built for themselves, are harassing and imprisoning opposition candidates who seem to pose even a minor threat.
