Topic: Wolfe Tone

Theobald Wolfe Tone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tone drew up a memorandum for Jackson on the state of Ireland, which he described as ripe for revolution; the memorandum was betrayed to the government by an attorney named Cockayne, to whom Jackson had imprudently disclosed his mission; and in April 1794 Jackson was arrested on a charge of treason.
The active participation of the Catholics in the movement of the United Irishmen was strengthened by the appointment of Tone as paid secretary of the Roman Catholic Committee in the spring of 1792.
His mother, Matilda (or Mathilda) Tone also emigrated to the United States, and she is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.

Theobald Wolfe Tone - Bodenstown Graveyard - Kildare, Ireland
As Wolfe Tone had never held a Commission in the English Army his trial by court martial was blatantly illegal, and his sentence was a travesty of justice.
Tone who had actively participated in the fighting was made prisoner, tried by court martial on November 10th and sentenced to death.
From the outset Wolfe Tone had enthusiastically embraced the principles of the French Revolution and had become a free-thinker in matters religious and a republican in politics.

Tone accepted this condition but insisted that he should not be required to give evidence against Jackson, and in fact remained openly in Dublin until after Jackson's trial.
In July 1792, Tone became a paid secretary of the Catholic Committee, and in December 1792 he organised a Catholic Convention of elected delegates in the Tailors' Hall, Dublin.
The political thinking of Tone and his associates was strongly influenced by the democratic principles of the French revolutionary ideals of 'Liberty, Equality, Fraternity', and it was natural that they should turn to France for help.

Famous Irish - Theobald Wolfe Tone
Theobald Wolfe Tone was a teacher and a lawyer and, although he was a member of the Protestant Ascendency, he was also one of Ireland's greatest patriots.
Raised as a Protestant, he enjoyed his youth as a privileged member of Irish society, receiving an excellent education, including the study of law at Trinity College.
By 1794, however, the society combined an unprecedented national vision with a rejection of monarchy and an appeal for complete independence, factors that led to its being outlawed by the British Crown after betrayal by an informer.

 Ireland's OWN: History
Tone's potent words at the time echo down the years to us and have inspired Republicans to this day: 'To subvert the tyranny of our execrable government, to break the connection with England, the never-failing source of all our political evils, and to assert the independence of my country - these were my objects.
"Tone's egalitarian ideas in an Ireland wracked by distinctions of class and religion and his articulation of Irish nationality were what led to his acknowledgement as one of the greatest political thinkers and the most successful organisers of revolt since Owen Roe O'Neill.
This annual commemoration is considered the most important event in the Republican calendar, not least for its continuity of Irish Republican thinking since Tone first espoused his philosophy of Separatism.

The Wild Geese Today -- The Resurrection of Edward Hand
The scene would have pleased Wolfe Tone, Matilda Tone and all United Irish adherents: a Catholic priest in an American court defended by an Irishman (just recently a republican political prisoner) of the Anglican faith -- from whose pioneering legal strategy arose the lawyer-client privilege and the inviolability of the doctor-patient relationship.
His father-in-law, William Sampson, in a dramatic case in a New York courtroom (actually the new City Hall) in 1813, defended successfully the principle of the "priest-penitent privilege" that allowed a Jesuit priest to refuse in court to disclose the details of a confession.
hen he returned from a brief sojourn near Princeton, New Jersey, to France in 1796, Wolfe Tone left behind Matilda Witherington Tone, a wife (baptised as Martha) as committed to the United Irish ideals of Catholic-Protestant fraternity and equality as was her soon-to-be-martyred husband.
