Liberal Party of Canada - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It continues to be damaging to the party and serves as a threat to the Liberal's prospects of forming the government after the next federal election.
It was not until Wilfrid Laurier became leader that the Liberal Party emerged as a modern party.
After the King-Byng Affair of 1926, the Liberals argued that the Governor General of Canada should no longer be appointed on the recommendation of the British government.

Arthur Meighen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The party was defeated by the Liberals led by William Lyon Mackenzie King, and Meighen was personally defeated in Portage La Prairie.
He became leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party and Prime Minister on July 7, 1920, when Borden resigned.
Arthur Meighen (June 16, 1874 – August 5, 1960) was the ninth Prime Minister of Canada from July 10, 1920, to December 29, 1921, and June 29 to September 25, 1926.

In desperation, the Tories again turned to Arthur Meighen for leadership, but Meighen was trounced by the CCF when he attempted to enter the House of Commons in a February 1942 by-election in York South.
It ran in the 1940 election as "National Government" even though it was in opposition.
The trek ended in Regina on July 1, 1935 when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, on orders from the Prime Minister, attacked a public meeting of 3,000 strikers leaving one dead and dozens injured.

The hard-line Democratic Unionists were on course to win nine seats, up four from the last British parliamentary election in 2001, when the Ulster Unionists were still on top with six.

When Trimble became the UUP leader in 1995, the uncharismatic former law professor was considered to be a hardliner within the party.
