The EU's relations with Turkmenistan - Overview
Last elections held on 19th December 2004; all 50 members elected belong to the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan, and are as such approved in advance by the President.
In the latest example of this voluntary isolationism in August 2005, Turkmenistan took the opportunity of a summit of the heads of state of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in Kazan to formally downgrade its participation in the 12-country body to that of an associate member.
In December 1999, however, the Khalk Maslakhaty (or People’s Council, Turkmenistan’s supreme legislative body), altered the constitution again to allow the President to remain in office indefinitely.

The sentences were increased to life imprisonment the following day by the Khalk Maslakhaty, Turkmenistan’s supreme legislature.
Further attempts to limit independent information entering the country included a ban on importing newspapers from the Russian Federation.
