Samuel had lost his seat in the 1935 election and the leadership of the party fell to Sir Archibald Sinclair.
In 1981 defectors from the moderate wing of the Labour Party, led by former Cabinet ministers Roy Jenkins, David Owen and Shirley Williams, founded the Social Democratic Party.
At the 1922 and 1923 elections the Liberals won barely a third of the vote and a quarter of the seats in the House of Commons as many radical voters abandoned the divided Liberals and went over to Labour.

This has been achieved under the conventions of first past the post elections, which the party has argued is not truly reflective of the strength of the parties.
However in the run up to the 1987 election a formal Alliance pact was drawn up where the two parties would decide which seats each was running in so as not to split their vote.
