Topic: The European Dream

 World
France and most Euronationalists dream of the day that the European Union will stretch from Portugal to Siberia to Kamchatka.
Europeans, especially younger Europeans, have convinced themselves that they are not responsible for any major crime, and are actually the heirs to a luminous cultural tradition (not to centuries of massacres, racism and injustice).
Europeans are much less open to cultural exchanges than they proclaim: the west sees immigration as a problem (unlike the USA that sees it as a solution), the east preempts the "problem" from happening by minimizing immigration.

 DNC: Democratic Party Platform
Democrats are committed to building an America in which no neighborhood or town see joblessness and shuttered businesses commonplace or inevitable, and where no families or young adults surrender their God-given right to work hard and live the American dream.
Democrats support President Clinton's veto of the Republican tax scheme that would have diminished anti-discrimination protections for middle-class and lower-income workers.
With Democrats in the White House, we have passed the Family and Medical Leave law, which has been used by 20 million Americans to care for a newborn baby or a sick loved one.

The Lisbon European Council dream for the EU to be the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world by 2010 cannot be realised unless we stimulate and I mean stimulate SMEs.
I have been told by Mr Martí, one of his vice-presidents, that the EIB is owned by the Member States and, as such, according to the Treaty, it is not an EU institution obliged to respond to the European Parliament, the Court of Auditors or OLAF.
It is about time the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers recognise that Africa is not like the US or Europe, where democracy can be understood.

The European Dream - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
According to Rifkin, the "European Dream", which champions communalism, sustainability, and human rights over property rights and radical individualism, is better-suited to 21st century challenges than the "American dream" of personal fortune, which may be obsolete.
The European Dream: How Europe's Vision of the Future Is Quietly Eclipsing the American Dream is a book, by Jeremy Rifkin, published in September 2004.
He argues that the European Union, which he describes as the first truly postmodern governing body, has the potential to become a world superpower.

TCS: Tech Central Station - Mr. Rifkin's Pipe Dream
In "The European Dream," Rifkin demonstrates that his ineptness extends to political science and economics.
Stephen Jay Gould dismissed Rifkin's "Algeny" as "a cleverly constructed tract of anti-intellectual propaganda masquerading as scholarship," concluding that he had not "ever read a shoddier work." But then he had not read "The European Dream."
He's at it again in a completely different realm in a new book, "The European Dream: How Europe's Vision of the Future Is Quietly Eclipsing the American Dream" (Tarcher/Penguin, 435 pages, $25.95).

The Commons Blog: Rifkin's European Dream
It "made the individual the master of his (sic) fate" whereas Europeans recognize that this "no longer works" in "an increasingly interdependent world." The European dream has "humbled" American companies (but his examples are all based on government regulatory actions, not on competition with European companies).
What Rifkin doesn't say is that the American dream is driven by the private sector, while his European dream is driven by government.
Rifkin's criticisms of the American dream -- the large numbers of people in prison, high health care costs, and growing income disparity between rich and poor -- are arguably the result not of private action but of government action.
