Television - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In many cases other companies, TV stations or individuals are engaged to do the syndication work, in other words to sell the product into the markets they are allowed to sell into by contract from the copyright holders, in most cases the producers.
All of these early TV systems shared the same aspect ratio of 4:3 which was chosen to match the Academy Ratio used in cinema films at the time.
It is often abbreviated as TV or the telly.

Frell Me Dead - FS mention in Variety - Jan 24, 2005 issue
Chuck Larsen, the veteran TV syndicator who runs his October Moon outfit, says the cable-to-syndication marketplace has heated up dramatically since he helped to pioneer the trend three years ago with the release of MTV's "Real World" into off-cable syndication.
Although there are no shows now on cable that are angling to make the leap into firstrun TV syndication, Shapiro says the trend is inevitable "because of all the cross-ownership of media companies." Disney, Viacom, NBC Universal and News Corp. each own the requisite combination of cable networks, TV stations, distribution operations and production factories.
Egged on by their mega-conglom parents, Shapiro says cable networks could soon become laboratories for shows that, once they find an audience, gravitate to the more-lucrative groves of TV syndication --- where a franchise such as "Oprah" or "Entertainment Tonight" can harvest hundreds of millions of dollars.

Specifically, TV on DVD, and studios are using the platform as a form of syndication that appeals to different sets of fans and different types of shows.
With the meteoric rise of TV DVD, its effect on the financial and scheduling aspects of TV syndication depends on the program and its position on the syndication food chain, said several industry experts.
Typically, a TV show is sold into the syndicated markets across the country after 100 episodes (five seasons), with some programming entering into syndication after 88 shows (four seasons).

 Television syndication
In U.S TV industry, television syndication is a form of syndication in which a set of programs (episodes of a TV drama, for example) is sold to multiple stations.
In many cases other companies, [TV stations] or individuals are engaged to do the syndication work, in other words to sell the product into the markets they are allowed to sell into by contract from the copyright holders, in most cases the producers.
However, syndication differs from network affiliation in that the contracts are limited to a specific set of programs, and the stations typically get a right to freely schedule the program within certain conditions such as up to three times within a two-year period.

Television in the United States Details, Meaning Television in the United States Article and Explanation Guide
Syndication and independent television often went hand in hand, and were generally seen as the "afterlife" for a program with mixed success in its first run, or for cult TV classics like Gilligan's Island and Rocky and Bullwinkle.
TV syndication is the practice of selling or leasing shows to television stations independent of network packages.
Some TV shows seem to fit the auteur theory of filmmaking—David E. Kelley, for example, is widely believed to write almost all of every script for every one of his shows, while other shows, particularly sitcoms, are very much the result of groupthink.

The proposed loosening of the TV station ownership caps now being debated by Congress could have an even more profound impact on the marketplace, if the major media companies that also own the top syndication studios also are allowed to expand their control over the TV station marketplace.
Duncan said it still is too early to determine what will happen with syndication's share of GRPs and ad dollars will be during the 2003-04 season, but the syndication ad marketplace, at least, has been one of the healthiest during recent scatter markets.
A specially edited version of "Sex," which contains footage shot specifically for a commercial TV audience, is being sold much the way broadcast syndicators have pitched top-rated off-network shows such as "Seinfeld" and "Friends" and at equivalent prices.

Variety.com - Cablers raise syndie stakes
One of the most notable of these cable-to-syndication transplants is MGM's "Stargate SG-1," the TV version of the hit theatrical movie, which began life as a weekly hourlong series on Showtime in July 1997.
Other cable shows are waiting in the wings for potential big-dollar harvests from the syndication of their reruns: "South Park" to be distributed by Mort Marcus' Debmar Studios, which has begun pitching TV station groups; and, further down the road, HBO's "The Sopranos" and Sony's "The Shield."
Marcus, whose Debmar will syndicate "South Park," says he's expecting the cable-to-syndication trend to intensify in the next few years because there are fewer and fewer certified hits being manufactured by the broadcast networks.

Zap2it - TV news - Sci Fi Cancels 'The Invisible Man'
In TV syndication, "Invisible" is averaging a modest 1.8 rating, but it's a solid fifth in adults 18-49 and fourth among adults 25-54 among scripted, syndicated first-run action hours.
In syndication, where "Invisible" premiered three months after its Sci Fi launch, TV stations will be able to keep running it through August.
Although the series benefited from airing on a dual platform, on both the Sci Fi Channel and on various TV stations through syndication, the show became too expensive to support thanks to special effects costs integral to the show's plot, sources tell Variety.
