 Swedish Election 2002
Although the immigration issue was of comparatively little importance to the majority of voters, this was the first time it was raised in such a direct manner by an established parliamentary party.
Accordingly, there is some question as to whether it makes any difference what kinds of messages voters and political leaders convey to each other at election time.
The organization is led by Bengt Silfverstrand, a Member of Parliament who states that, “The government speaks with forked tongue.

Parliamentary elections held in August 2001 provided Fiji with a democratically elected government and gave a mandate to the government of Prime Minister Laisenia QARASE.
Free and peaceful elections in 1999 resulted in a government led by an Indo-Fijian, but a coup in May 2000 ushered in a prolonged period of political turmoil.
A new transitional government, inaugurated on 1 November 2001, was to be the first step toward holding national elections in three years.

September, 2002, would be a suitable time to study what was happening in the Swedish general election campaign but also some of the controversial issues omitted by common consent of the parties already sitting in the Riksdag.
This Group’s election observers are often asked by ordinary voters in the post-Communist societies where much of the BHHRG’s activities take place whether there aren’t enough problems back home in the West to keep them occupied.
Although Swedish pollsters anticipate an electoral participation far higher than Britain’s miserable 59% in the June, 2001, general election, many Swedes would regard a turnout in the mid-80s% as a severe challenge to the standing of the political system.

The parliament has made a first decision; a second one will be taken after the general election in September 2002.
In Finland a new constitution came into force on March 1st 2000, stipulating that the Parliament is to participate in the national preparation of decisions taken at EU-level.
The Swedish government acted as the Riksdag demanded, but in both cases the eventual EU decision was not in line with the position of the Riksdag.

 CNN.com - Swedish poll win protects welfare - September 16, 2002
Several opinion polls before the election had suggested a close race for power but the Social Democrats actually managed to gain 13 seats for a total of 144 in the 349-seat Riksdag.
The three parties had a combined 191 parliamentary seats, compared to 158 for the four centre-right opposition parties, led by the conservative Moderate Party, according to official results AP reported.
Persson, who wins his third straight term at the helm, said: "This is an important moment for me as party leader -- to win an election and go against a European trend, (and) to win so clearly when in government.

BLOG@STEFANGEENS.COM: The first quinquennial Swedish EU parliamentary election poster slogan review
I'm sure that political parties have surmised this election will not involve much homework on the part of the electorate, and hence that their poster slogans will have to bear the brunt of voter scrutiny.
I'm not going to vote in the EU parliamentary elections on June 13 because I cannot.
I suspect they are sitting out this election.

Last June, in advance of October parliamentary elections, two members of OSCE Parliamentary Assembly's Working Group on Belarus visited Minsk.
The Belarusian authorities naturally protested and agreement was reached for Belarusian parliamentary delegation to attend the annual meeting of OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in Edinburgh in July in order to take part in a genuine debate regarding the substance of the resolution.
They were German MP Uta Zapf, the Chair of the Group, and Swedish MP Urban Ahlin.
