 CER Solidarity Twenty Years After
Another legacy of the end of Solidarity's unity was that it had an important influence on the rise and success of Solidarity’s major antagonist, the post-communists.
I see four turning points: 1980—the emergence of Solidarity, 1981—the declaration of martial law, 1989—the triumph of Solidarity (I am reticent to call it a complete success, but the collapse of communism in 1989 was, nevertheless, a triumph) and, finally, the recent reelection of post-Communist president Aleksander Kwasniewski.
If one looks at the last presidential election, Solidarity had little emotive appeal to the voters.
