The party claimed that Curtis had been framed by police for his role in defending immigrant workers.
The SWP's most high profile and controversial campaign in the late 1980s and early 1990s was its Mark Curtis Defense Committee, established after Curtis, an SWP activist and trade union organizer, was charged and convicted on burglary and rape charges in 1988.
The SWP supported both the civil rights movement and the Black nationalist movement which grew during the 1960s.

 Socialist Workers Party
The Socialst Worker's Party has suffered infiltration and break-ins by the FBI for almost as long as it has existed, but it is the only organization to actually take the FBI to court for violating the law, and win its case.
The lengthy (1973 - 1986) lawsuit filed against the FBI by the SWP revealed that the COINTELPRO-style activities of the Bureau were not halted in 1971, as Director John Edgar Hoover had announced publically at the time.
One FBI agent came forward to admit that his colleagues in the Chicago field office alone had been doing "...a bag job on members of the Socialst Workers Party about once a week."

Attempts were made by Paul and his ally Jim Nichol, who later became a solicitor and a major player in the Carl Bridgewater campaign, to widen the appeal of the Socialist Worker by including features on a broader selection of topics, like feminism or football.

Born in Palestine to Zionist parents in 1917, Ygael Gluckstein became a Trotskyist during the 1930s and played a leading role in the attempt to forge a movement uniting Arab and Jewish workers.
In the late 1940s he developed the theory that Russia wasn’t a workers’ state but a form of bureaucratic state capitalism, a theory which has characterised the tendency with which he was associated for the remaining five decades of his life.
His political legacy is embodied in the British Socialist Workers Party and its sister organisations in the International Socialist Tendency.
