The unease within the Party grew as the First World War went on, and this was reflected in a number of wildcat unofficial strikes organised by a Labour Party affiliate, the British Socialist Party.
Throughout the 1950s and early 1960s the party became split between moderate modernisers led by Hugh Gaitskell, which were associated with the main trade unions, and more traditional socialist elements within the party.
Peter Mandelson was a senior figure in this process, and exercised a great deal of authority in the party following the death of John Smith and the subsequent election of Tony Blair as party leader.
