In 1996 the party nominated Perot for the presidency, with Patrick Choate as his running mate, but with 8% of the vote Perot did not fare as well as he had in 1992.
The Perot faction held their own convention and nominated John Hagelin for president, but Buchanan was recognized as the nominee by the Federal Election Commission.
Patrick J. Buchanan, a strongly conservative polemicist and former Republican, captured much of the party's machine from the old guard aligned with Perot and secured the nomination.

A third party must meet two challenges: it must convince the majority of voters that the reforms it is advocating are necessary, and it must convince them of the viability of the third-party challenge.
The party also proved inept in convincing the rank and file members to put aside their racial prejudices; when "faced [with] a choice between white supremacy and a Populist governor...they chose white supremacy." These election results also indicated a major vulnerability of third parties.
To increase the appeal of the party to Southerners, the convention delegates adopted a platform identical to the alliance platform.

 DLC: Reform! by Ed Kilgore
For Democrats, an insurgent political reform agenda could help finally put to rest perceptions that they are the party of Washington, the party that is most estranged from the mainstream values that are so rarely honored in Washington.
The only practical course for redistricting reform -- especially if it is to reach state legislative redistricting as well as congressional redistricting -- is a strong grassroots effort in every state to reform the process.
Democrats should lead another charge for campaign finance reform, insisting on tough Federal Elections Commission enforcement of existing laws, along with a ban on fund raising and contributions by lobbyists.

 Reform party needs reformation
The Reform Party was created by Ross Perot after his first failed run at the presidency in 1992, and his goal when creating the beast was to upset the balance of the American political system.
The only thing that everyone in the Reform Party can agree on is that Republicans and Democrats are merely wings of the same party, an old charge made throughout American history that has never quite been accepted as a political truth.
Donald Trump and Pat Buchanan both announced that they were defecting from the GOP on Monday, in hope of winning the Reform nomination.

Split Over Buchanan Splinters Reform Party Convention
ARTFORD -- The national chairman-elect of the Reform Party briefly walked out of the party's Connecticut state convention on Saturday after organizers refused to admit a wing of the party worried about the rising influence of Patrick J. Buchanan.
Fear of just such a debacle had caused Reform Party leaders in New Hampshire to postpone a state convention scheduled for Saturday, after they learned that Buchanan's forces planned to deploy enough people to determine the outcome of elections for six statewide offices.
The internal squabbling long preceded Buchanan's statements that he might abandon his bid for the Republican Presidential nomination to seek the Reform Party nomination.

Wired News: Reform Voting Evokes E-Votes
Party officials say that the contest between Patrick Buchanan and John Hagelin for the Reform Party presidential nomination will be settled through a unique "mixed-media" election, giving voters the option of voting either through a mail-in paper ballot or on the Web over a three-day period prior to the party's Aug. 10-13 national convention.
The Reform Party nominating process is eBallot's first major commission.
In January, VoteHere.net held the first binding Internet election, but there were only 35 voters in that contest -- the Alaskan Republican straw poll.

DLC: Idea of the Week: A Reform Insurgency
We need redistricting reform to avoid the growing phenomenon, in both the U.S. House and many state legislatures, of politicians choosing voters rather than voters choosing politicians.
At stake is not simply the solvency of our retirement system and our federal government, but the interests and political loyalties of millions of younger middle-class voters who increasingly believe their current earnings and their own retirement security will be sacrificed to keep the old system going for a few more decades.
Not remotely as often, we'd bet, as you heard Republicans, from the president on down, talk about Democrats as the big-government party.
