Topic: Queen Anne

 Queen Anne (1665-1714)
Anne was born on 6 February 1665, the second daughter of James, Duke of York, later James II.
The Queen showed her displeasure by refusing to admit the Hanoverian ambassador to her court.
Anne herself became queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland upon the death of William III.

 Britannia: Monarchs of Britain
Anne was torn personally as well as politically by the succession question: her Stuart upbringing compelled her to choose as heir her half-brother, the Old Pretender and favorite of the Tories, but she had already elected to side with Whigs when supporting Mary and William over James II.
Anne refrained from politically antagonizing Parliament, but was compelled to attend most Cabinet meetings to keep her half-brother, James the Old Pretender, under heel.
The untimely death of William III nullified, in effect, the Settlement Act of 1701: Anne was James' daughter through his Protestant marriage, and therefore, presented no conflict with the act.

 Anne Boleyn
Anne spent part of her childhood at the court of the Archduchess Margaret.
They came for Anne on the morning of May 19 to take her to the Tower Green, where she was to be afforded the dignity of a private execution.
Interestingly, shortly before her execution on charges of adultery, the Queen's marriage to the King was dissolved and declared invalid.

Anne Boleyn: A New Life of England's Tragic Queen by Joanna Denny was published in the UK in April 2004.
When Anne avoided Henry's company, was sullen and evasive to him, he sent her from court; he hoped that a few months in the country would persuade her of his charms.
Anne knew that her marriage and future children would never be recognized as legitimate by Catholic Europe.

Anne, queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
Party lines were slowly hardening, but party government and ministerial responsibility were not yet established; intrigues and the favor of the queen still made and unmade cabinets, though the influence of public opinion, shaped by an increasingly powerful press and elections, was growing.
Thus it was at least partly through the pressure of the Marlboroughs that Anne was induced, despite her Tory sympathies, to oust Tory ministers in favor of Whigs.
Since neither she nor William had surviving children and support for her exiled Catholic half brother rose and fell in Great Britain (see Stuart, James Francis Edward; Jacobites), the question of succession continued after the Act of Settlement (1701) and after Anne’s accession.

 Queen Anne Stuart of England
Anne supported the revolution and opposed her father.
She was born on February 6, 1665 to the Duke and Duchess of York and was their second daughter out of three children.
This revolution created a constitutional, limited monarchy in England, where elected representatives, not a dynastic monarch, truly ruled.

History of the Monarchy > The Stuarts > Anne
Under the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht, France recognised Anne's title (and exiled James II's Roman Catholic son, James Stuart, from France) - the treaty also confirmed England's possession of Gibraltar.
However, in 1711, as a result of a Tory ministry's disagreement with the Whig majority in the House of Lords over the future peace settlement to war in Europe, Anne was persuaded to create peers for party purposes.
On William's death in 1702, his sister-in-law Anne (Protestant younger daughter of James II and his first wife) succeeded him.

It was after William's death in 1702 that Anne became monarch, but prior to her succession she agreed to the Act of Settlement in 1701, signed by William, which promised the throne to the Electress of Hanover (and her heirs) as heir of James I (VI of Scotland).
Anne presided over the union of the parliaments of Scotland and England, creating the parliament of Great Britain on 1 May 1707.She believed in mixed ministries, and managed to achieve that until 1708, when the Whigs became dominant.

Anne's story starts with her early years, when her parents send her to the court in the Netherlands and later to France, with the hope of teaching her manners and refinement, and getting her betrothed to a wealthy guy.
Once she had born a daughter and not a son, the King made false claims against Anne for treasonous acts.
Anne first falls for a guy way out of her league, and when the two of them pledge to marry, the court finds out and Cardinal Wolsey determines to nip it in the bud.

This was successful Port Royal surrendered, and was named Annapolis in honor of the English queen, while Acadia was henceforth called Nova Scotia.
A beginning of English success was thus made, and the bold scheme of oonquering Canada was now conceived.

he Queen Anne proved enormously influential in the United States, where it dominated architectural debate and practice from the 1870s.
The Queen Anne received its first major exposure in America at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, where the British government constructed several buildings in the style.
The name is rather inappropriate, for the historical precedents used by Shaw and his followers had little to do with Queen Anne who reigned 1702-14 or the formal Renaissance architecture that was dominant during her reign.
