James Knox Polk - Encyclopedia of Political Information
Polk was a member of the United States House of Representatives (1825-39), also serving as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives (1835-39), and Governor of Tennessee (1839-41).
James Knox Polk (November 2, 1795 - June 15, 1849) was the 11th (1845-1849) President of the United States.
Democrats nominated dark horse candidate Polk on the ninth ballot of the Democratic National Convention after party favorite Martin Van Buren lost the bid because of his opposition to annexing Texas, a position deemed unacceptable by Southerners and by former president Andrew Jackson.

 James K. Polk
Polk returned to Tennessee and was elected governor in 1839, but was defeated in two succeeding elections.
James Knox Polk was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, the eldest of 10 children.
In 1825 Polk was elected to the House of Representatives from Tennessee and served in Congress until 1839, the last four years as Speaker.

 American President
In 1825, Polk was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where he served for six terms.
The election was vicious, with slavery and slander at its center.
With Jackson behind him, Polk became the Speaker of the House in 1835, a position he held for four years.

 Welcome to The American Presidency
Polk was born on Nov. 2, 1795, in Mecklenburg County, N.C. As a boy he moved to what is now Maury County, Tenn., with his parents, Samuel and Jane (Knox) Polk.
Polk's earlier stand had encouraged the "All of Oregon" members of his party to adopt the cry of "Fifty-four Forty or Fight," however, and they denounced his acceptance of compromise.
Polk was soon devoting more time to politics than to law.

Books on James K. Polk - 11th President
Polk's presidency coincided with the eruption of the territorial slavery issue, which within a few years would lead to the catastrophe of the Civil War.
A steady stream of slaves temporarily fled the plantation throughout Polk's tenure as absentee slavemaster.
Startlingly, Dusinberre shows how Polk sought to hide from public knowledge the fact that, while he was president, he was secretly buying as many slaves as his plantation revenues permitted.

Handbook of Texas Online: POLK COUNTY
Polk County, named after President James K. Polk, was one of twenty-three counties formed by the first state legislature of Texas in 1846.
A clear measure of the impact on the Polk County electorate is that the minority vote against Davis in 1869 equals almost exactly the majority returned against Republican Ulysses S. Grant in 1872.
San Jacinto County, where most of Polk County's freedmen lived, separated from Polk County in 1870, and with it went most Republican support.

NCHS - James K. Polk Memorial
Polk became the first dark horse in American politics when he was chosen over Martin Van Buren as the Democratic nominee for president against Henry Clay of the Whig party.
His eloquent speeches, unfailing support of President Andrew Jackson, and firm belief in Jeffersonian principles--equal rights for all, special privileges for none, and friendship for the common people--won him the nickname "Napoleon of the Stump." In 1839 Polk refused renomination for Congress to become a successful Democratic candidate for governor of Tennessee.
Born in 1795 on the 250-acre farm worked by his parents, Jane and Samuel, James Knox Polk spent most of his childhood among the gently rolling hills of Mecklenburg County.
