Protracted crisis following government ouster in French Polynesia
Temaru’s Union for Democracy alliance refused to recognise the installation of longtime Chirac ally Gaston Flosse as president and has held a series of protests to demand fresh elections throughout the French territory to settle the issue.
Temaru and Geros, who boycotted the session, refused to recognise the vote, describing it as nothing more than election for “the president of the Taheraa Huiraatira” (Flosse’s party).
In the wake of Temaru’s ousting, the French government dismissed his appeals for fresh elections and openly backed efforts to install Flosse as the territory’s president.

Ousted president pursues French Polynesia elections (political chaos in French Pacific territory)
Pro-independence leader Oscar Temaru lost a censure vote in the group of 118 Central Pacific islands' parliament on October 9 and the assembly elected Gaston Flosse, a close Chirac ally, as the new head of government last Friday.
Mr Temaru and his cabinet are refusing to vacate the presidential office and want the French government to dissolve the Polynesian assembly and call fresh elections.

Temaru, for instance, is actually a French civil servant, as is his deputy mayor and most of the party leadership.
"Oscar got 35 percent of the vote in the last election, but he has only four seats in the government," Ortas says.
Because of a system that assigns seats on a basis of geography rather than population, one vote in an outlying area can be worth three or four votes in Tahiti, which is Temaru's area of strength.

United Press International: Controversial Flosse wins Tahiti elections
Temaru's supporters in the Assembly boycotted the vote, leaving Flosse with the 29 of 57 votes that he needed to win.
Flosse's win on Friday came after he failed to secure the two-thirds majority required to elect a new president in a hastily convened Assembly opposition vote on October 19.
In a bid to recover the office, Flosse's Popular Union party secured a no-confidence vote in the Territorial Assembly on Oct. 9, igniting popular demands for dissolution of the Assembly and calls for new territory-wide elections on behalf of Temaru.

Pro-independence parties topple government following Tahiti by-election
Temaru promised that his government’s aims would be “reunification” and, in view of territory’s current economic situation, voters “must not return to the ballot boxes before four years”.
The by-election result was a decisive rebuff to the colonial authorities in Paris and to Flosse who was determined to maintain his grip on power after 20 years in office.
After his success in the May elections, he declared that discussions on independence were at least 15 years away, and required satisfactory progress towards economic independence from France.

While the former is represented by Gaston Flosse, French Polynesia’s current president, the latter is championed by Oscar Temaru, long-term leader of the country’s independence movement, who was elected president in last year’s general elections.
Based on this election system, the stakes are particularly high in the upcoming election: If the People’s Rally party leads even by one single vote, it will obtain not a two-thirds majority in the assembly, given that it already holds a majority of 17, from 20 of the members from the outer islands.
In 1983, Temaru became mayor of Faa’a, a position he holds to this day.
