The first known example of an opinion poll was a local straw vote conducted by The Harrisburg Pennsylvanian in 1824, showing Andrew Jackson leading John Quincy Adams by 335 votes to 169 in the contest for the United States Presidency.
The best-known failure of opinion polling to date in the United States was the prediction that Thomas Dewey would defeat Harry S. Truman in the 1948 Presidential election.
One site, Opinion Republic (http://www.opinionrepublic.com) is an experiment to capture public opinion and then converge on the most broadly accepted opinions.

Regular polling over the years has found a deep gulf in immigration opinions between the public and the tiny fraction of Americans who are in the "Opinion Elite" (top leaders of corporations, unions, religion, universities, think tanks, political parties, the federal Administration and Congress).
The public is far more favorable to decreasing legal immigration than the Opinion Elite (57 percent of the public versus 18 percent of Opinion Elite).
Arizona voters approved Proposition 200 to prevent illegal aliens from voting and require state and local government employees who discover a violation of federal immigration law to make a written report to federal immigration authorities.

The nationwide poll of 1,005 likely voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.2% showed that 51% believed that that abortion destroys a human life and is manslaughter while another 35% said that abortion does not destroy a life and is not manslaughter.
A Zogby International "American Values" poll, released on August 26, 1999, showed the majority of Americans believe abortion is manslaughter, are opposed to tax-funded partial birth abortions, and that parents should be notified if their minor child seeks an abortion.
A Wirthlin post-election poll showed 51 percent of voters identified themselves as "pro-life", while only 43 percent considered themselves "pro-choice." In 1996, Wirthlin's post-election poll corroborated the 1995 data, reporting that 60 percent of votes favored prohibiting elective abortion in most cases.

Researchers found that opinions on restricting civil liberties for Muslim Americans vary by political self-identification.
Forty-one percent of Republican respondents said that Muslim American civic groups should be infiltrated, compared with 21 percent of Democrats and 27 percent of independents.
Thirty-four percent of Republicans said that profiling of Muslim Americans is necessary, compared with 17 percent of Democrats.

A large majority, 58 percent, agree that the U.S. should "admit fewer immigrants each year." Only 6 percent want "more immigrants each year," and 30 percent want to "keep immigration at the current annual levels."
Zogby's poll found that 58 percent of Mexicans agree with the statement, "the territory of the United States' Southwest rightfully belongs to Mexico." Only 28 percent disagree, and 14 percent are unsure.
