The Sovereign was represented by the Governor, who granted Royal Assent to Acts of Parliament in Northern Ireland, but executive power rested with the Prime Minister, the leader of the largest party in the House of Commons.
The British monarch was initially represented as head of state by a Lord Lieutenant, although this was replaced by the office of Governor of Northern Ireland from December 12, 1922.
