On February 26, 1952, the Mississippi legislature finally adopted the magnolia as the state flower, opposed by only one vote.
The selection remained unofficial, however, as the legislature did not act on the result.
In 1900, when Mississippi schoolchildren were asked to vote for a state flower, they selected the magnolia over a group that included cape jasmine, yellow jasmine and cotton.

Prairie Island Bill-1996 HF 2784, SF 2495 Legislative watch on the latest Minnesota legislature bills re the Prairie Island nuke and radioactive storage.
Northern States Power, main electrical supplier for Minnesota and much of Wisconsin, in the early 1970's built a nuclear electrical generating plant just a few hundred yards from the small reservation separated by impoundment waters of the Mississippi Lock and Dam Number 2 nearby which are used for cooling the nuke.
Their chiefs were among the signatories of the 1805 Zebulon Pike Treaty, that ceded land -- about 36,000,000 acres -- east of the Mississippi, and later almost all land except for 10 mile strips on each side of the Minnesota River (to the northwest) which were lost by the Traverse des Siouxtreaty of 1858.

Fordice called a special session of the Mississippi Legislature in July to deal with the matter, but lost a confirmation vote of the full Senate Education Committee -- putting him in the posture of seeking a new slate of College Board appointees.
The Senate Education Committee's job is to rule on the qualifications of the appointees based upon Mississippi law.
The State Senate rejected four qualified, competent while males appointees in July based on the group's lack of diversity and Fordice's attempt to force his will on a Legislature that is not at all prepared to surrender power to this or any other governor.

 Governors of Mississippi
Governor Holmes, who did not seek re-election in 1819, was appointed by the state legislature to the United States Senate in 1820 where he served until he was again elected governor in 1825, by a margin of 7 to 1.
Governor Holmes was inaugurated October 7, 1817, at Natchez, the new state capital, and Mississippi was formally admitted to statehood on December 10, 1817.
At the time of his appointment as fourth governor of the Mississippi Territory in 1809, Holmes was serving in the United States Congress as a representative from Virginia, a position he had held since 1797.
