On 25 January 1972, Manson and three others were found guilty and on 29 March, all four were sentenced to death.
1899 (17 March Julian) Lavrenty Pavlovich Beria, Russian director of the Cheka in Georgia, then head of the NKVD succeeding Nikolay I. Yezhov (who was shot on orders from Stalin in 1938).
The trial of another defendant, Charles "Tex" Watson, was delayed by extradition proceedings, but he was likewise found guilty and sentenced to death.

They beat to death two policemen in front of the tobacco monopoly's office and burned the stocks of tobacco.
The rioting which followed was not consciously revolutionary but was against the hated monopoly police which symbolized for the people the government's exploitation of their island.
