New Delhi, Dec 3: The union council of ministers on Wednesday evening recommended the dissolution of the Lok Sabha, bringing the curtain down on a fortnight-long political drama that involved a ding-dong battle between the Congress and the BJP to form the next government.
According to a late night Rashtrapati Bhavan communique, President KR Narayanan has called prime minister IK Gujral and finance minister P Chidambaram for a "briefing" at noon on Thursday, signalling for sure that Gujral would remain the caretaker prime minister till the election is held and a new government formed.
With the Congress and the BJP formally expressing their inability to muster the requisite majority to form the government, a presidential notification on the dissolution of the eleventh Lok Sabha is now a foregone conclusion.
