Jospin announced he was retiring from politics after he failed to gain enough votes to enter the second-round vote for president.
As he promised, Jospin resigned as prime minister after the runoff.
There was no doubting Jospin's desire for the presidency this year -- or his eagerness for revenge on Chirac.

Following the early General Election of 25 May and 1 June 1997, Lionel Jospin was appointed Prime Minister on 2 June 1997 until May 2002.

Lionel Jospin's "Euro speech": European integration process falters
Jospin has already lost one of his coalition partners—Jean-Pierre Chevenement's extremely nationalist oriented citizens' movement—because it considered his concessions to the European Union and his statute of autonomy for Corsica went too far.
Jospin sums up his own idea of Europe in the formula “a federation of nation states”.
The EU summit in Nice last December almost foundered on this question because Germany and France were unable to agree on the weighting of votes in the Council of Ministers.

TIME Europe France: The Wages of Success 3/27/2000
Jospin's announcements were good politics at least in the short run, since they aimed to shore up his support among two major leftist constituencies: the poor and the civil servants.
Meanwhile, the opposition scuttled a vaunted reform of the judicial system, Jospin made a terrible faux pas in the Middle East last month by referring to Lebanon's anti-Israeli Hizballah as "terrorists," and his attempts to shepherd a negotiated solution with Corsican nationalists have only sown confusion.
The loss of his right-hand man, former Finance Minister Dominique Strauss-Kahn (forced to resign in the face of a fraud investigation), will handicap Jospin in coming months, as will the discrediting of Allègre and Sautter and the mayoral ambitions of cabinet stalwarts like Labor Minister Martine Aubry and Justice Minister Elisabeth Guigou.

A sound legacy of social reform and a reputation for honesty were not enough to endear Prime Minister Lionel Jospin to French voters.
The result was a narrow defeat, avenged two years later when, following Mr Chirac's disastrous dissolution of parliament, Mr Jospin led the left to victory and became prime minister.
He was never troubled by the kind of allegations faced by his rival, incumbent President Jacques Chirac, accused of corruption during his time as Mayor of Paris and as president of the Gaullist RPR Party.
