© Fractured Faith: Liberal Party Women and the Suffrage Issue in Britain, 1892-1914
Even in the United States women’s divisions of state and national party committees did not appear until 1920, when both Republicans and Democrats first began to vie with the non-partisan League of Women Voters for the allegiance of female recruits.
Furthermore though the Primrose League could not expect to remain untouched by divisions over the proper role of women in politics, Conservatives were out of office after December 1905, allowing many of the Dames’ inevitable disputes to remain private.
Growing numbers of Primrose Dames and Liberal women learned not only to face the general public in door-to-door canvassing but to confront male politicians in local caucuses.

"The Future of the League of Women Voters," 1921
A League of Women Voters which competes, no matter how prudently and provisionally, with the absolute authority which the national parities are entitled to exert on the political decisions of their members is to that extent a menace to American institutions.
Instead of discrediting the League, as he intended, the GovernorÂ’s indictment of its objects will intensify its appeal to those of the newly enfranchised voters who believe that the bestowal of political power on women can be made to contribute a positively new element to the standards and practices of American politics.
If the local centers of partisan political activity functioned vigorously and provided the American nation with a sufficient means of informing, unfolding and clarifying popular opinion, party politicians would not fear the competition of a League of Women Voters and such a League would be deprived of its clearest title to existence.
