 Kyrgyzstan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kyrgyzstan is divided into seven provinces (singular: oblast (область), plural: oblasttar (областтар)); adminstered by appointed governors.
In December 1990, the Supreme Soviet voted to change the republic's name to the Republic of Kyrgyzstan.
However, the republic's press was permitted to adopt a more liberal stance and to establish a new publication, Literaturny Kyrgyzstan, by the Union of Writers.

Kyrgyzstan subsequently became a member of the Russian-dominated Commonwealth of Independent States, and a new consitutution was approved.
Governed under the constitution of 1993 as amended, it has a unicameral parliament consisting of the 75-member Jogorku Kenesh (Supreme Council); members are elected for five-year terms.
He retained his post in the 1995 elections, which were denounced by opposition leaders but given guarded support by UN observers.

According to the Russian news agency Ria Novosti (20 July 2005, 20:04), the Central Electoral Commission of Kyrgyzstan announced on 20 July 2005 that the newly elected President of the Republic Kourmanbek Bakiev shall be the first Kyrghyz president to be granted a pectoral medal and a personal standard.
Attached to Law is a sheet titled "Kyrgyz Republikasynyn Mamlekettik Zheleginin Shemalyk Surotu / Shematicheskoe Izobrazhenie Gosudarstvennogo Flaga Respubliki Kyrgyzstan".
Bakiev shall be confered these two emblems on 14 August 2005 during his official inauguration.
