Topic: King of Burundi

 Burundi (04/05)
Burundi's first Hutu president, Melchior Ndadaye, of the Hutu-dominated FRODEBU Party, was elected in 1993.
In 1966, King Mwambutsa was deposed by his son, Prince Ntare IV, who himself was deposed the same year by a military coup lead by Capt. Michel Micombero.
This act marked the beginning of the Rwandan genocide, while in Burundi, the death of Ntaryamira exacerbated the violence and unrest.

 BURUNDI
As UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan pointed out during his visit to Burundi in May 1998, this is a system in desperate need of reform (see UN Press Release, 1998).
Cairo Declaration which resulted from the 1995 African Heads of State summit declares that “the security of individuals was a fundamental problem in Burundi” (Evans, 1997: 34).
Far from conforming to the tenets of impartiality and fairness, the judicial system is virtually totally dominated by Tutsi.

The last few days in Burundi were so packed that there was literally no time to write.
I sat on a dais with local dignitaries and watched many singing groups, and a basketball demonstration (The NBA is TOTALLY hip in Burundi), and an appearance by The King’s Drummers - a hereditarily composed group of traditional drummers whose grandfathers were the court drummers for The King, whose ancestral home was outside of Gitega.

On 22 November 1997, the solemnity of Christ King, the Catholic Church of Burundi began the jubilee celebrations to commemorate the first centenary of the country's evangelisation.
Having placed our hope in the living God, the Bishops add, «we remain united with God and among us, in such a way that this Jubilee year will be the occasion for a new breath for our Church and our country».
To contrast this sad reality, the Bishops urge the construction of the country's future «in peace and harmony, through the various changes that Burundi has experiences and continues to experience», and linking the Christian doctrine to local cultural traditions.
