Czech Republic: In parliamentary elections held June 19 and 20, the Social Democrats win 32.3% of the vote (74 of 200 seats), the Civic Democratic Party 27.7% (63 seats), the Communists 11% (24 seats), the Christian Democrats 9% (20 seats), the Freedom Union 8.6% (19 seats), and the Republicans 3.9%.
Australia: In Queensland elections, the Labor Party wins 38.9% of primary votes (44 of 89 seats), followed by Pauline Hanson's One Nation party with 22.7% (11 seats), the Liberal Party with 16.1% (9 seats), and the National Party with 15.2% (23 seats); 2 independents are elected.
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines: In parliamentary elections, Prime Minister Sir James Fitz-Allen Mitchell's New Democratic Party wins 8 of 15 seats (with 45.8% of the vote), and the Unity Labour Party 7 (54.2%).

He is elected by the National Assembly on June 29, with 190 votes against 76 for Makhdoom Amin Fahim, and is sworn in on June 30.
He is confirmed by the Senate on June 24.

As expected, on June 7 Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson approved the Department of Justice proposal to split the world's biggest software company into two entities.
The company, of course, has announced it will appeal the decision, although they do not support Judge Jackson's intention to expedite the appeal process directly to the Supreme Court.

Detecting Corked Bats: After Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs was ejected June 3 from a major league baseball game for using a corked bat, officials had the rest of his 76 bats X-rayed by a radiologist.
In 1987, NIST researchers conducted a study for Major League Baseball and determined that medical X-ray machines were better than ultrasound for detecting corked bats.
A preliminary report that verifies their test method appears in the May/June issue of the NIST Journal of Research.
