Topic: Jagiello

Wladislaus II of Poland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jogaila (or Jagiello) was from the dynasty of dukes and grand dukes of Lithuania Gediminaičiai.
Jagiello's conversion marked the establishment of Catholic Christianity as the official religion of Lithuania following a brief period of Catholic kingship in the 1250s.
With the Union of Krewo in 1385, Jagiello married Queen Jadwiga of Poland (who was then only 11 years old) and established the Jagiellonian dynasty, which would rule in Poland and Lithuania until 1572.

WLADISLAUS - LoveToKnow Article on WLADISLAUS
His third wife, Elizabeth Grabowska, died without issue, and the question of the succession then became so serious that Jagiello's advisers counselled him to betroth his daughter to Frederick of Hohen-zollern, who was to be educated in Poland as the heir to the throne.
The knights endeavoured to re-establish their position by sowing dissensions between Poland and Lithuania.
At the dying request of the childless Jadwiga he espoused a Styrian lady, Maria Cillei, who bore him a daughter, also called Jadwiga.

Polish nobility agreed on the condition that Jagiello and all of Lithuania, become Christian.
The rule of Jagiello was characterized by the struggle with the Order of the Teutonic Knights over Pomorze (Pomerania) and the Baltic part of Lithuania, Zmudz (Samogotia).
The newly granted privileges moved the country closer to an elected monarchy, where the gentry chose or at least approved the king (under the Jagiellonians this was mostly a formality).

Union of Krewo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
At that time, Jagiello also promised to incorporate Lithuania into Poland, but this was opposed by the majority of the Lithuanian nobility.
The Union of Krewo (or Union of Krevo) was a political and dynastic agreement between Queen Jadwiga of Poland and Grand Prince Jagiello of Lithuania and the beginning of the Polish-Lithuanian Union.
While Jagiello (King Wladislaus II) and Jadwiga ruled over both Poland and Lithuania, real power in the Grand Principality rested with Jagiello's cousin, Vytautas, who followed a generally independent policy there.

 Ladislaus Jagiello
Ladislaus Jagiello (1348-1434) became grand duke of Lithuania in 1377 and was crowned king of Poland in 1396.
Through Ladislaus Jagiello, Poland entered into a union with Lithuania, a country covering a vast territory between the Baltic and the Black Sea, inhabited by a mixture of pagan Lithuanians and Orthodox Christians in the Rus territory captured by Lithuania.
In 1413, Ladislaus Jagiello concluded a new union at Horodlo, which strengthened Poland's links with Lithuania, and issued new privileges for the gentry in order to secure the throne for his sons.

The Marriage of Jadwiga and Jagiello
Queen Jadwiga of Poland (1374?-1399) and King Wladyslaw Jagiello of Poland and Lithuania (1351?-1434), whose marriage joined Poland and Lithuania in a centuries-long union, are the major players in a dramatic, romantic, and/or pious story that still captures the Polish (if not the Lithuanian!) hearts.
Jagiello was unlikely to have ordered such requisitioning; he was an astute enough statesman to understand that it was verboten.
She is said to have brought about a temporary reconciliation between Jagiello and his cousin Witold, afterwards Grand Duke of Lithuania, which mitigated the continuing power struggles between the King and Witold over the country.

The Pope, in fact, recognised the conversion of the Lithuanians (which the Knights claimed was 'insincere') and also ratified a complicated marriage tangle in Poland which resulted in the astute King Jagiello, a Henry VII type figure, being confirmed on the throne and in the overlordship of Lithuania, which was held by his cousin Witold.
There were two: Poland, which was Christian, and Lithuania, which became converted rapidly in an attempt to pre-empt the Knights.

After two abortive campaigns, the war of 1422 was ended by the Melno Treaty which slightly improved the Polish frontier and definitely attributed Samogitia to Lithuania.
