Infoshop.org - Library - The IST voted to expel the ISO on 5 July in London
Socialist Worker has published special features for each major demonstration of the global justice movement, as well as supplements to relate to the anti-death penalty movement, the new struggle around civil rights and police brutality, the Nader campaign and the protests against Bush's inauguration.
This is not the action of an organization that is confident in its ideas and practice.
But most importantly, they took the political question of Puerto Rico as a colony of the United States with the utmost regard.

Left Turn and the International Socialist Tendency
This episode — and the subsequent decision to break with the IST — underline that the decentralized structurelessness characteristic of many anti-capitalist networks isn't necessarily more democratic than the representative structures traditional inside the workers' movement.
We made these concerns clear to the three members of LT who attended Marxism 2003 in London this July (none of the leading comrades from New York or Washington came).
During a visit to New York in March I had a frank but perfectly friendly discussion with Bilal, Brian Campbell, and another comrade.

Theory: - Building a mass socialist international
The successful launch of the Socialist Movement Pakistan at a congress of Lahore 19/20 March 2005, with a clear organisational and political banner shows the correctness of our decision to separate ourselves from the LPP.
This was highlighted in 2003 by a letter of resignation from their party by a longstanding member, Sean Healy.
This is indisputable, and there are many instances of where this has happened.

 Weekly Worker 375 Thursday March 15 2001
This would be laughable were it not for the fact that it represents an effort by the SWP to impose a de facto split on the ISO.
But now the SWP has tried to pre-empt this process by appointing itself the Supreme Court of the ISO - and, by extension, the entire Tendency - and seeks to overturn the democratic vote of the ISO convention.
The former members have stated their intention to pursue their democratic right to appeal to the ISO's elected Appeals Committee, in which the Steering Committee holds just one of three positions.

Ironically Left Turn also left the IST in 2003 leaving the tendency with no affiliate in the United States.
Many IST sources also refer to the OSI of Puerto Rico as being in the IST but it is actually close to the ISO of the USA.

 International Socialist Review
If a war decisively continues the politics of the struggle for self-determination, it is a war for national liberation and we support it.
As socialists, we attempt to analyze all of the political aspects of a war: the real policies (not the stated ones) of which the war is a continuation, and the policies of the classes waging the war.
It is socialists who have to argue the case for anti-imperialism, national liberation, internationalism and the revolutionary fight against war.

Left Turn would leave the IST in 2003, leaving the IST with no American affiliate.
In 2000 the ISO endorsed the Green Party candidate for president, Ralph Nader, and worked on the campaign.
In the 1980's, the IST became unhappy with Barbara and Cal Winslow, the leaders of the ISO.

 SWP Statement
ON 5 MARCH 2001 the Socialist Workers Party (Britain) broke off relations with the International Socialist Organization, hitherto its sister group in the United States.
This was a major step, given that the two organizations had worked together closely as supporters of the International Socialist Tendency since the late 1970s.
As soon as the presidential election was over, the ISO dropped the Nader campaign, preferring to orient instead on liberal Democrats angered by George W. Bush's stolen victory.

The American IS is not a member of the International Socialist Tendency though a split from it, the International Socialist Organization, was in the IST for many years until its expulsion in 2001.
International Socialists can also refer to the forerunner of the British Socialist Workers Party - International Socialists (UK).
There was also an American group - International Socialists (USA) that is a part of the larger group Solidarity.

This is most evident in their argument that the state, in the form of the dictatorship of the proletariat, is the chief weapon in the struggle to establish communism.
Resistance and the Democratic socialist party are very similar to the Socialist Workers Party of the USA.
He states that the "nub of the issue in this debate seems to consist of disagreement over two fundamental notions," namely that "democratic centralist revolutionary party is necessary for a successful socialist revolution" and, secondly, "the necessity of a workers' state arising from a socialist revolution." Nothing could be further from the truth.

His political legacy is embodied in the British Socialist Workers Party and its sister organisations in the International Socialist Tendency.
In the late 1940s he developed the theory that Russia wasn’t a workers’ state but a form of bureaucratic state capitalism, a theory which has characterised the tendency with which he was associated for the remaining five decades of his life.

More recently, in New Zealand the SWP CC uncritically endorsed the SWO National Committee's decision to expel five members in March 1997.
In our case, we have for the past three years maintained a sisterly relationship with Socialist Alternative in Australia which also operates on the basis of the politics of the IS tradition, while not being formally recognised by the SWP CC as part of the IST.
For example, in 1995 the SWP CC prompted the National Committee of the Australian International Socialist Organisation to expel the political leadership of the ISO in Melbourne which resulted in over 1/3 of the national membership leaving in protest to form Socialist Alternative.

 Internationalism — SWP (Britain)
This is an international current of revolutionary socialist organisations which share the same political outlook and seek to help each other by exchanging experience and other forms of practical support.
Therefore it can only be effectively challenged by an international revolutionary movement.
Internationalism is at the heart of any genuine socialist politics.

However, Left Turn would also decide to leave the tendency only two years later, in the fall of 2003.
This perspective, similar to Solidarity's, caused conflict with their British and Canadian comrades, which eventually led to the split.
The ISO had decided to end their affiliation with the International Socialist Tendency, led by the UK-based Socialist Workers Party.

Gould was also a speaker at the Socialist Scholars Conference and at a forum on The Future of the Left to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Communist Manifesto in 1998.14 That same year, Gould joined the advisory board of the newly formed Committee to Free Lori Berenson, an American political activist imprisoned in Peru.
Given this record, it is not surprising that the Encyclopedia of the American Left singled Gould out as one of the "few scientists [who] have emerged as major public allies of the left" and as "perhaps the most formidable example of a supportive presence at left events and for left causes."15
