Although Hu was a dedicated reformer and one of Deng Xiaoping's most important associates, he was later forced to resign in 1987 from his post as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China; leaving officially on January 16.
Although he was a "retired" official who had made "mistakes", public pressure forced the CPC to accord him a State Funeral attended by party leaders, and a eulogy which praised his work in restoring political norm and promoting economic development after the Cultural Revolution.
He held many positions in the party and became an important political leader in the CCP after the Cultural Revolution.

Hu Jintao (Hu Chin-t'ao) was born in Jiangyan, Jiangsu province.
In 1985, Hu was transferred to Guizhou as secretary of CCP Guizhou Branch, which began his time as a provincial governor.
However, speculations around the political rivalry between Jiang and Hu largely subsided when Jiang resigned as Chairman of the Central Military Commission in September 2004, his last official post.

Hu Yaobang served as party chief from 1981 to 1987, and is remembered by many Chinese for overturning cases against millions persecuted during Mao Zedong's political movements and launching the economic and political reforms that ended the turmoil of the Cultural Revolution.
Hu Jintao has approved plans for a series of events honoring the late party chief Hu Yaobang on the 90th anniversary of his birth on Nov. 20, the sources said.
Hu Jintao took over as the party's top leader in 2002 and as president in 2003, but many allies of his predecessor, Jiang Zemin, remain in power.

Hu, born into a peasant family in Hunan province, was a political commissar during the 1934–35 Long March.
In 1941 he served under Deng and later worked under him in provincial and central government.
His death ignited the pro-democracy movement, which was eventually crushed in Tiananmen Square in June 1989.
