British House of Commons - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The House of Commons is a democratically elected body, consisting of 646 members, who are known as "Members of Parliament" or "MPs." Members are elected by the first past the post system of election for limited terms, holding office until Parliament is dissolved (a maximum of five years).
The Clerk of the House is the chief clerk and officer of the House of Commons (but is not a member of the House itself).
By constitutional convention, all ministers must be members of the House of Commons or House of Lords.

The Deputy Speaker of the House, the position I held in the last Parliament, is not an elected one, as the Speaker’s office is. Instead, the newly elected Prime Minister appoints a Member to this position, as well as appointing Members to other positions, such as Assistant Speakers.
The Act also delineates that the Speaker is to preside at all meetings of the House of Commons, and establishes the Speaker’s right to a casting vote in the event of ties, which is the only time when the Speaker has a right to vote.
Finally, when he retires, he receives an appointment to the House of Lords and a pension.

The House of Commons was also the lower house of the Parliament of Ireland, before its abolition under the 1801 Act of Union, and the short-lived Parliament of Southern Ireland in 1920, which was subsequently superseded by the Dáil of the Irish Free State.
The Commons generally holds much more power than the upper house (the senate or House of Lords).
The leader of the majority party in the House of Commons usually becomes the prime minister.

 HOUSE OF COMMONS DEBATES
The justice minister and the government clearly have not kept their promises to safeguard the privacy rights of law abiding citizens.
Laws passed without enough thought by the House and laws poorly implemented by government bureaucrats can result in the violation of privacy rights of law abiding citizens.
This is why we have every right to be skeptical of the assurances the minister is giving us today about this piece of legislation.

 House of Commons: Government Defeats
During the period 1945-70, when the government was only very rarely defeated, the impression grew up that a government which was defeated must either reverse the decision, seek a vote of confidence or resign.

 House of 'Commons'
Sadly, we are now in the age of the career politician.
The Houses of Parliament are now inhabited by a breed of politician more concerned about digging up some dirt on their opposite number than in putting forward compelling arguments for new policy.
We are now blessed with political spods trained at colleges and universities in the art of spin, lies and undermining the opposition.

Fifthly, that there is not the highest standing court in this land that ought to enter into competency either for dignity or authority with this high court of parliament, which with your Majesty's royal assent gives laws to other courts, but from other courts receives neither laws or orders.
Fourthly, we avouch also that our House is a court of record, and so ever esteemed.

 House of Commons
By the time of Edward IÍs death in 1307, the summoning of representatives of townspeople and gentry was becoming common practice, and although they were present at only three of the first seven parliaments of Edward II, they attended all but two of them between 1310 and 1327.
The Commons became a normal component of Edward IIIÍs parliaments and were invariably present from the mid-fourteenth century onward.
The emergence of the Commons and the progressive extension of its power is a matter of immense significance in the development of the unwritten English "constitution."

What you can do from here, then, is link directly to some of my recent speeches and questions.
Now that national newspapers don't report what happens there – except for question time – and now that the BBC has reduced its coverage of parliament, it is difficult to know what your representatives are saying.
I sometimes joke that the best way to keep a secret is to make a speech about it in the House of Commons.
