EPS Faculty and Staff: M. Mobin Shorish: The Islamic Revolution and Education in Iran
One cannot, of course, deny the pre-Islamic Iran; (which is dealt with in the textbooks for history) but for the present what matters to the Iranian revolutionaries and most other Iranian intellectuals is that their history is indistinguishable from the history of Islam.
As long as Islam is perceived by the Iranians (and others) as a form of Iranian nationalism the Revolution will not only fail to grow beyond Iran it will also act as a divisive factor in fracturing further this multi-ethnic society.
Through field work in Iran, interviews with appropriate persons, the discussion of major themes of the Iranian textbooks, and other relevant documents this paper tries to draw a profile of the Islamic person (Homo-Islamicus) whose creation is the aspiration of the revolutionaries.

The New York Review of Books: Islamic Revolution
Islamic history provides its own models of revolution; its own prescriptions on the theory and practice of dissent, disobedience, resistance, and revolt; its own memories of past revolutions, some ending in success, others, in the historic memory the more significant ones, ending in failure and martyrdom.
For better or for worse — which remains to be seen—what happened in Iran was a revolution in the classical sense, a mass movement with wide popular participation that resulted in a major shift in economic as well as political power, and that inaugurated, or, perhaps more accurately, continued, a process of vast social transformation.
Nevertheless, the appeal of the Iranian revolution was so strong that the Yugoslav papers reported trials of young men in Sarajevo accused of plotting to overthrow the regime and establish an Islamic republic in Bosnia.
