The Role of the Individual in History
This reproach was justitied as long as the doctrine that social phenomena conformed to certain laws reduced the influence of the personal qualities of prominent historical individuals to a cipher.
But every act of "securing" is also an historical event.
This would be going to an extreme which leaves no room for the particle of truth contained in the opposite opinion.

Man’s freedom is determined by his ability to understand himself and to make his world comprehensible.

dialectical materialism. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
Historical materialism is deterministic; that is, it prescribes that history inevitably follows certain laws and that individuals have little or no influence on its development.
Under these doctrines the social, political, and intellectual life of society reflect only the economic structure, since human beings create the forms of social life solely in response to economic needs.
Central to historical materialism is the belief that change takes place through the meeting of two opposing forces (thesis and antithesis); their opposition is resolved by combination produced by a higher force (synthesis).

This possibility is predicated on the truth attaining transmissible form--a form towards which Benjamin's criticism, in all of its allegorical manifestations, pushes it.

Critiques such as these imply that the abstraction of politics from the economy and the naturalization of a civil society of abstract individuals are historical conditions which are open to question and hence potentially to transformation.
