Hughes quit politics at the height of his popularity, retiring from the Senate after one term in 1974 to devote himself to lay religious work and open the Harold Hughes Center for alcoholism treatment.
DES MOINES, Iowa-- Harold Hughes, a truck driver who beat alcoholism to become a three-term governor and a U.S. senator, died Thursday at 74.
Hughes defeated David Stanley in 1968 for the Senate.

Harold Macmillan was defeated in the 1945 General Election but returned to the House of Commons later that year in a by-election at Bromley.
Macmillan was also highly critical of the foreign policies of Stanley Baldwin and Neville Chamberlain and remained a backbencher until in 1940 Winston Churchill invited him to join the government as parliamentary secretary to the ministry of supply.
Harold Macmillan, the grandson of Daniel Macmillan, the publisher, was born in 1894.

 Harold Cruse: Author, activist and U-M professor
Harold Cruse, one of the most influential writers on African-American politics, culture and history, died of heart failure Friday in the Sunrise Assisted Living facility in Ann Arbor.
"Cruse's legacy is awe-inspiring," the Library Journal wrote in a review of the 2002 book "The Essential Harold Cruse," a collection of writings by and about him.
A new edition of the book was published last month, with an introduction written by Stanley Crouch.

In June 1954, the House on Un-American Activities Committee, also known as the Velde Commission because it was chaired by Rep. Harold Velde, came to Portland.
This group was responsible for monitoring, tracking, collecting information, infiltrating, harassing, and intimidating members of the Communist Party and labor organizers throughout the 1930s, and also worked in cooperation during the 1950s with the Velde Commission/House Un-American Activities Committee investigation of Stanley Moore.
Although the Commission never made its case against Moore, the Reed College Board of Trustees decided to dismiss him nevertheless.
