Although the party did not win a seat in the 2004 election, 4.31% of the vote was a significant improvement.
Current party leader Jim Harris announced on April 24, 2006 that he will not stand for re-election, and a new leader will be chosen at the party's national convention in Ottawa in August, 2006.
He was first elected to the office with over 80% of the vote and the support of the leaders of all of the provincial level Green parties.
