George V. Voinovich was elected governor in November 1990 and re-elected in 1994, garnering 72 percent of the vote -- a 20th century Ohio record and the largest margin of victory in the United States in 1994 by a candidate for governor.
With his hometown on the brink of financial ruin, George Voinovich returned to Cleveland from his post as lieutenant governor and was elected mayor in 1979.
As lieutenant governor, Voinovich was the first chairman of Ohio's State and Local Government Commission, which promotes stronger cooperation among government officials in the state.

WASHINGTON - An anti-tax group released a poll Tuesday showing that Ohio Republicans are so angry at Sen. George Voinovich for his stand against President Bush's tax cut that they would support other Republicans for the Senate next year, including Secretary of State Ken Blackwell.
But he reiterated that he is running only for governor in 2006 and won't run against Voinovich.
Their poll showed that among Ohio Republicans, Bush's approval rating was at 88.5 percent while Voinovich's was at 51 percent.
