John Gamble Shanks attended a log school house in Canada, where he acquired his education, and there he grew to manhood.
John Gamble Shanks, a highly esteemed resident of the city of Greenwood, who during a long and active career has taken a prominent part in the development of the county, along various lines, was born in County Down, Ireland on Aug 19, 1838, son of Hugh and Mary (Gallaway) Shanks.
McMahon got a tract of 160 acres of partly cleared land, on which, however, there were no buildings, but he at once erected a log house and barn, into the former of which the family moved.

The "gentleman" that located the original that was stolen from the house many years ago was given the reproduction as a thank you, at a public ceremony no less, for allowing the Gamble House to purchase from him the original lantern that he located and purchased on E-bay.
I do not know where you received the infromation stating that the Gamble House profited in any way from the sale of this lantern but it is completly false.
So basically the owner profited twice: he bought stolen property (something that people are often punished for!), which was then bought back from him at the Gamble House's expense; and then he sold off the lantern that was given to him and profited from that as well.
