Maurice Thorez was the general secretary of the party from 1930 until his death in 1964.
This is in comparison to the period after World War II, when PCF was France's largest political party, with 28.8% in the 1946 parliamentary elections.
Duclos succeeded Thorez as general secretary serving from 1964 until 1972 and running for President of France in 1969 winning 21% of the vote.
