Conservative Party (UK) - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
After losing a vote of confidence, Duncan Smith remained as caretaker leader until Michael Howard, MP for Folkestone and Hythe, was elected to the post of leader (as the only candidate) on 6 November 2003.
The formal name is a vestige from the 1912 merger with the Liberal Unionist Party, and an echo of the party's defence (1886-1921) of the Union of Great Britain and Ireland and subsequent insistence on British sovereignty in Northern Ireland in opposition to Irish nationalist and republican aspirations.

A Logical Voice: Trying to unseat Michael Howard is not "dirty tricks"
According to the Independent today, the Labour Party candidate in Howard's Folkestone and Hythe constituency has whinged about an approach made to her by the Liberal Democrats, asking her to defect, to ensure that Howard is defeated.
She said she was told that if she defected she would succeed in ousting the Tory leader, who is defending a majority of 5,907 in Folkestone and Hythe, with the Liberal Democrats his nearest rival.
The Labour candidate apparently believes that this is "dirty tricks", even though a Labour Party minister, Dennis MacShane recently endorsed tactical voting in the constituency by asking Labour supporters to switch to the Lib Dems to unseat the Tory leader:
