The Quasi-War with France was one factor that contributed to the Republican takeover of Congress and the Presidency in the "Revolution of 1800".

FEDERALIST PARTY - LoveToKnow Article on FEDERALIST PARTY
The Federalists were charged by the Republicans with being aristocrats and monarchists, and it is certain.
The Federalist Party, which may be regarded as definitely organized practically from 1791, was led, leaving Washington aside, by Alexander Hamilton (q.v.) and John Adams.
It may be regarded as, in various important respects, the lineal predecessor of the American Whig and Republican parties.

Anti-Federalism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This movement is sometimes called the Anti-Administration "Party", and it would coalesce into one of the nation's first two true political parties, the Republican Party of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison (not to be confused with the modern Republican Party).
The Federalist movement gradually showed broad-construction, nationalistic tendencies; the Anti-Federalist movement favored strict-constructionism and advocated popular rights against the asserted aristocratic, centralizing tendencies of its opponent, and gradually was transformed into the Republican Party of Thomas Jefferson.
They argued that the strong national government proposed by the Federalists was a threat to the rights of individuals and that the President would become a king.

Death of the Federalist Party by Richard Seltzer
Meanwhile the number of Federalists on the Supreme Court was diminishing.
In 1800, Governor Edward Rutledge, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and a former congressman, and his brother John, a signer of the Constitution and a former associate justice (1790-91) and chief justice (1795) of the Supreme Court, both died.
Thus the Federalist influence was allowed to continue on the Supreme Court until Story died in 1845.

The Democratic-Republican Party (whose members also referred to themselves as Republicans or Jeffersonian Republicans) held power for 28 years following the inauguration of President Jefferson in 1801.
James Madison argued in his The Federalist “No. 10” paper against a system in which “factions” (his word for parties) might be able to seize control of the government (see Federalist, The).

His party irreparably split and he on his way to retirement, Adams was nevertheless able to conclude peace with France and to secure the appointment of moderate Federalist John Marshall as chief justice.
Long after the Federalist party was dead, Marshall enshrined its principles in constitutional law.
Yet, because many members of the Democratic-Republican party of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison had also championed the Constitution, the Federalist party cannot be considered the lineal descendant of the pro-Constitution, or "federalist," grouping of the 1780s.

 Federalist Party
he Federalist Party was born out of the controversy over adoption of the proposed Federal Constitution in 1787-1788, before the American party system itself had been conceived.
Not until these congressional debates over Jay's Treaty of 1794 did two parties emerge clearly: the Federalist party led by Hamilton and the Democratic-Republican party of Madison and Jefferson From then on, the Federalists championed commercial and diplomatic harmony with Britain, domestic stability and order, and strong national government under powerful executive and judicial branches.
Long after the party was dead, Marshall preserved its principles from the bench.

 Bambooweb: United States Democratic Party
After the disintegration of the Federalist party, the Republicans were the only major party in American politics.
In the early 20th century, the traditional symbol of the Democratic party in Midwestern states such as Indiana and Ohio was the rooster, as opposed to the Republican eagle.
The presidency of Andrew Jackson, however, destroyed the unity of the party, with the Jacksonians forming the Democratic-Republican faction, opposed by the National Republicans, led by John Quincy Adams.

 Federalist Party
John Adams' administration marked the end of Federalist control of the presidency with Thomas Jefferson's election in 1800 ushering in an era of Democratic-Republicans.
Hamilton headed the Federalists who favored a strong central government, while Jefferson was the leader of the Jeffersonian-Republicans, those favoring a diffusion of power.
Some members opposed the War and flirted with secession; Federalism ironically had become a party of states' rights and was largely confined to New England.

 Welcome to The American Presidency
Although parties were widely regarded as inimical to free government, and although Washington, Hamilton, and Adams deplored their rise (together with the tendency toward a North versus South and pro-British versus pro-French polarization of political opinion), parties were an established fact by the presidential election of 1796.
During Adams's presidency the Federalists attempted to stifle dissent by the Alien and Sedition Acts (1798).
The death of Washington in 1799 and of Hamilton in 1804 left the Federalists without a powerful leader, and they proved inept at the highly organized popular politics of the Democratic-Republicans.

 President Elect - 1789
George Washington was a delegate to both constitutional congresses, was unanimously named commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolution, and was unanimously named president of the Constitutional Convention that drafted the Constitution.
From the 69 electors, who had to name two choices for president on their ballot, Washington received one vote on every ballot -- once again a unanimous election.
His popularity cut across the political spectrum, including those who advocated a strong central government (the Federalists, with whom Washington agreed), those who wanted the states to hold the most power (soon to be called the Democratic-Republicans), and even those who didn't really care about politics.
