Convective roll snow squalls developed across parts of eastern Iowa, southern Wisconsin, and much of Illinois on 12 February 1999.
GOES-8 3.9 micron shortwave InfraRed (IR) imagery (below left) shows that the cloud tops over the region on 12 February were a mixture of supercooled water droplets (dark gray enhancement, due to solar reflection) and ice crystals (warmer than -10 C, light gray enhancement; -10 C and colder, blue enhancement).
NOAA GOES-8 visible imagery shows the convective nature of these elongated snow bands (above left), and the resulting snow streaks on the ground the following day (above right).

If yesterday marked the five month anniversary of the darkest day in American history, today - - the Day After - - must mark the anniversary of one of the greatest days in American history: because on September 12, a bruised and battered nation began to fight back.
Some fought back by rushing to aid and rescue the few surviving victims of the tragedy - and to aid and comfort the grieving and bereaved.
They have proved they are up to the task and I know they will continue to protect and defend us in the coming stages of the military campaign as well.
