 Estonica : History : Restoration of independence
On 16 November 1988, the Supreme Soviet of the <b>Estonianb> SSR passed a declaration on <b>Estonianb> sovereignty.
In November the same year the Supreme Soviet of the <b>Estonianb> SSR passed a decision on the events in Estonia in 1940 which declared the actions of the Soviet Union against the Republic of Estonia to be military aggression, an occupation and annexation.
On 30 March 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the <b>Estonianb> SSR passed a resolution ‘On the State Status of Estonia’ that proclaimed the Soviet rule unlawful from the moment of its enforcement.

On May 8, 1990, the symbols of the <b>Estonianb> SSR were abolished, and the official name of the country became again the Republic of Estonia.
