Until the Seventeenth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1913, Senators were elected by state legislatures, not the electorate of states.
Until the Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution of 1804, the runner-up in a Presidential election became the Vice President.
In some states, members of the state supreme court and other members of the state judiciary are elected.
