Topic: Elections in France

Elections in France - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
France elects on its national level a head of state - the president - and a legislature:
There also are public elections for some non-political positions, such as those for the judges of courts administering labor law (tribunaux de prud'hommes), elected by workers and employers, or those for judges administering cases of rural land leases.
The application of such rules in the case of certain politicians has been controversial; see for instance the case of Alain Juppé.

General elections in france 9/16 june 2002
In 1981 and 1988 the election and re-election of François Mitterrand as President of the Republic led to dissolution.
Although these two elections are typified by landslide victories, by the Right in 1968 and the Left in 1981, the same goes for the 1993 elections with victory for the Right, whereas the percentage of constituencies undergoing a second vote was one of the highest during the V Republic.
This cancels out the idea of an "election to rally voters" on the one hand, and confirms the major part played by abstentionists over the last twenty years in the unfurling of electoral confrontation on the other.

 Guardian Elections in France
France's 1958 constitution (for the Fifth Republic) was intended to deliver a strong president backed by a national assembly and prime minister, known because of its mix of styles as a semi-presidential system.
It continued the downturn that began with the presidential election, when the socialists were left in disarray as Lionel Jospin, the incumbent prime minister and third-placed candidate, handed in his resignation and Mr Chirac appointed a rightwinger, Jean-Pierre Raffarin, as interim prime minister.
In recent years, this has not been the case - the president was from the right and the prime minister (who represents the largest grouping in the assembly) was from the left.

PARIS - The elections for 22 regional councils and council presidents that took place across France in mid-March marked an increasing political polarization and a greater fracturing of the conservative coalition of President Jacques Chirac's Rally for the Republic (RPR) and the Union for French Democracy (UDF).
