D.S.K.: Resignation was a moral obligation to me. It was from my own free will that I decided to face judicial investigation as a normal citizen and not as a member of the Cabinet.
Last week a Paris judge acquitted the 52-year-old lawyer of document forgery, the last in a series of charges that prompted his resignation from the government of Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin in November 1999.
Loath to become a political handicap to Jospin and his colleagues, D.S.K. resigned in disgrace, vowing to prove his innocence.

 TIME.com: The Harder They Fall -- Nov. 15, 1999
Suave, cunning, hardworking and cosmopolitan, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, 50, was France's first truly modern Finance Minister.
A close friend and adviser to Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, D.S.K., as he is generally known, played a pivotal role as a centrist, free-market anchor for the left-leaning government that came to power in June 1997.
Despite the long-overdue democratization of justice, however, some now wonder whether the pendulum has swung too far, giving judicial officials unwarranted control over the political process.

The Scotsman - International - Jospin sees hopes lifted by aide’s comeback
Mr Strauss-Kahn - or "DSK" as the sharp-minded, smooth-talking Socialist is affectionately known in France - is a long-standing friend of Mr Jospin and one of his staunchest allies.
Widely credited with turning around the French economy, his shock resignation from the cabinet in November 1999 following accusations that he had forged documents to justify 600,000 francs (£60,000) in fees he collected as a business lawyer before becoming a minister, came as a huge blow to Mr Jospin.
Despite his low-key approach, "DSK" is already striking fear into the hearts of Mr Jospin’s centre-right opponents - and also some of his former associates.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, leading member of the Socialist Party and advocate of the “yes” camp, put the constitution’s defeat down to irrational “fear” and “demagogy.” But if there was any fear mongering, it was on the part of the constitution’s supporters.
Foreign Minister Michel Barnier warned that a “no” vote would put France “out in the cold” and “back in second league,” while Interior Minister Dominique de Villepin painted a nightmare scenario of immigrants flooding the country if the constitution—with its regulations reinforcing the EU’s perimeter borders—were to fail.
