In 2001 Dexter was elected leader of the Nova Scotia NDP.
He is the leader of the Nova Scotia New Democratic Party, and represents the riding of Cole Harbour in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly.

HALIFAX, NS, Sep. 27 (UPI) -- New Democrat politicians in Nova Scotia want the province to compile a list of elderly and disabled people who might need help during a major emergency.
Dexter also wants a law passed requiring senior citizen facilities to be required to have a generator or some kind of plan for residents in case power is out for more than 12 hours.

Halifax - The Tory government of Premier John Hamm is trying to privatize liquor stores through a vaguely-worded restructuring bill now before the provincial legislature, opposition New Democrat MLAs are warning.
NDP Leader Darrell Dexter says the proposed Government Restructuring (2001) Act will allow "wide-scale privatization of liquor sales" unless it is amended to specify that only stores operated by the provincial liquor commission are allowed.
So far the government is refusing to acknowledge concerns that private outlets will be permitted in areas 20 kilometres or more away from existing liquor stories unless the bill is changed, Dexter said.
