 Vilnius, the European Capital of Culture 2009
An official document by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union confirming the status of the European Capital of Culture is expected by November 2005.
It was unanimous to recommend Vilnius as the European Capital of Culture 2009 to the European Commission, the European Parliament and the European Union Council.
A nominee city is announced Capital of European Culture for one year and is provided with an opportunity to promote its own culture among nationals of other European Union countries.

The cloth is an authentic Scottish Tartan for all Europeans, registered by the Scottish Tartan Society, the United Kingdom Patent Office, the President of the European Union and the Commissioners in Brussels.

The tartan is made up of the colours on the flag of the European Union, running through the tartan is a small red line, this commemorates the blood spilt on our Continent since recorded history, the white line is slightly larger and represents peace on the Continent of Europe and the world.

IN Cork city a few days ago the only sign of ‘Europeanculture was a group of musical acrobats imitating their soul brothers in Brooklyn circa 1985.
As the cultural capital of Europe, it is quite extraordinary that the authorities at Cork Airport welcome and bid fairwell to visitors by allowing them to get wet between the aircraft and the terminal building during rainstorms.
Contrary to popular belief the design did not represent the number of member nations in the European Union.
