Coup d'état - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
2002: Unsuccessful coup to overthrow Hugo Chávez in Venezuela
In 2002 the United States allegedly supported a coup in Venezuela against President Hugo Chávez, despite Chávez having been elected by popular vote in two consecutive elections.
An example is Alberto Fujimori in Peru, who was democratically elected, but later took control of the legislative and judicial powers, or the coup of French President Louis Napoléon Bonaparte in 1851 against the powerful National Assembly.

During the Reagan-era, he served as a "consultant" to the National Security Council and the State Dept. Currently, Luttwak is senior fellow of "Preventive Diplomacy" at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think-tank with close ties to US intelligence.
Jack Kemp, Dole's running-mate in 1996, flat-out called Florida Supreme Court rulings that ordered the votes should be counted a "judicial coup d'etat." The theme was soon echoed in a chorus that included Paul Gigot of the Wall Street Journal, Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, and other right-wing propagandists.
During the presidential election, the key pivot points proved to be quite limited in number, not to mention patently obvious.

While the White House did not publicy support the ouster of Chávez, it suggested the president was partly to blame for his fate and dispatched US Ambassador Charles Shapiro to meet with Venezuela's interim president, Pedro Carmona, shortly after the coup.
The White House has never concealed its dislike of Chávez, a former paratrooper who himself led an unsuccessful coup in 1992 only to capture the presidency as a populist candidate six years later.
Although Chávez has preached reconciliation since his return to power, many of his staunchest supporters claim the coup simply confirmed their belief that the country's wealthy business leaders are in league with the US to prevent the president from pursuing his populist agenda.
