This was followed in 1996 by the publication of New Labour, New Life for Britain, the draft manifesto that was discussed and voted upon by party members across the country.
Labour's fourth successive election defeat was a major shock to the party.
The party's majority was increased to 97 in 1966,when Wilson went to the country asking for a mandate to finish the job.

Thomas Hilton Dawson (born 30 September 1953) was the Labour Party member of Parliament for the Lancashire constituency of Lancaster and Wyre from 1997 until 2005.
In 2004 he announced he would not be seeking re-election at the next General Election, seeking to return to work in children's services – his former career was as a social worker.
The local Constituency Labour Party selected Anne Sacks as its new candidate, however the seat was won by the Conservative Party candidate, Ben Wallace, with a 4.5% swing from Labour.
