The Chancellor of the Exchequer is the title held by the British cabinet minister responsible for all financial matters.
The office should not be confused with that of the Lord High Chancellor or the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, both Cabinet posts, or the Chancellor of the High Court, a senior judge (whose title until recently has been Vice-Chancellor).
The holder of the office of Chancellor is ex-officio Second Lord of the Treasury.

Brown has served as Chancellor of the Exchequer of the United Kingdom since May 1997 (the longest continuously serving Chancellor since Nicholas Vansittart 1812-1823) and is widely tipped to become Prime Minister after the retirement of Tony Blair.
On 15 June 2004, he became the longest continuous serving Chancellor of the Exchequer since the Reform Act 1832, passing the figure of seven years and 43 days set by David Lloyd George (1908–1915).
Brown was born in Glasgow and educated at Kirkcaldy High School.

In January 1828 he was made chancellor of the exchequer under the duke of Wellington; like his leader he disliked Roman Catholic emancipation, which he voted against in 1828.
Leaving office with Wellington in November 1830, Goulburn was home secretary under Sir Robert Peel for four months in 1835, and when this statesman returned to office in September 1841 he became chancellor of the exchequer for the second time.
Although ?eel himself did some of the chancellors work, Goulburn was responsible for a further reduction in the rate of interest on the national debt, and he aided his chief in the struggle which ended in the repeal of the corn laws.
