Caucus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Another prominent example is the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, whose members voice and advance issues affecting Hispanics in the United States and Puerto Rico.
One of the best-known examples is the Congressional Black Caucus, a group of African-American members of Congress.
According to some sources, it comes from the Algonquin word for "counsel," cau´-cau-as´u, and was probably introduced into American political usage through the Democratic Party machine in New York known as Tammany Hall, which liked to use Native American terms.

 Iowa Caucus Project 2004
The results of this caucus activity on both the Democratic and Republican sides are not binding on the elected delegates, but the delegates usually feel obligated to follow the wishes expressed by the caucus-goers.
On caucus night, Iowans gather by party preference to elect delegates to the 99 county conventions.
Any voter who is a registered Republican or Democrat, and can prove residency in Iowa, can participate in the caucus of their party.

Online NewsHour Vote 2004 The Democratic Primaries The Primary Versus The Caucus
In a primary, as in a caucus, voters elect delegates who support their candidate choice, but the vote is taken by ballot and the process is similar to a general election.
Each state party uses its own rules for delegate selection, but those rules are subject to approval from the Republican National Committee or the Democratic National Committee and the state's election law.
The caucus, however, encourages more intense voter participation in the nominating process than does a primary.

To find where your caucus is, call the county auditor's office at the county courthouse.
In Iowa, caucus-goers elect delegates to county conventions, who, in turn, elect delegates to district and state conventions where national convention delegates are selected.
Caucuses are held by both the Republican and Democratic parties every two years.

The Seattle Times: Politics: Caucus Q&A
Proof of voter registration is not required, although participants must be registered voters and attend the caucus in their precinct.
Any voter registered in that precinct who is willing to sign a statement declaring that he or she is a Democrat can participate.
If you can't find your voter-registration card, you can find out your precinct number by calling or going online with your county auditor (King County elections department number is 206-296-8683) or the state Democratic Party (206-583-0664).

CNN.com - Caucuses and democracy in Iowa and Iraq: Are direct elections best? - Jan. 19, 2004
To be sure, we hope that voters will pay close attention to the candidates' positions on important issues of the day, but the ballot of a completely uninformed voter counts equally with the ballot of the president of the League of Women Voters.
Needless to say, participation in a caucus demands much more of the voter than a traditional election does.
Only after considerable debate will votes be cast, and the results of the individual caucuses then aggregated on a statewide basis.
