This is due to the mass immigration from Scotland and Ireland earlier in the century and before.
The Maritimes usually refers to the Eastern provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.
Fiddlers Natalie MacMaster and Ashley MacIsaac in particular have reputations that got beyond the borders of that region, MacIsaac especially for his contemporary improvisations and flaunting of his unusual lifestyle.

 Canadian Maritimes: History & Genealogy
This is a history that shaped Canada and should be taught in Canadian high schools.
What was resolved in 7 years of war in America took Canada a 100 years of bitter political and religious infighting to sort out.
Nowhere is this more evident than the Planter/Loyalist split in the Maritimes.

Business Wire: Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline L.L.C. annou... @ HighBeam Research
By November 1999, Phase II is scheduled to provide approximately 440,000 million British thermal units per day (MMBtu/d) of firm natural gas transportation service to U.S. markets in Maine, New Hampshire and the Northeast, as well as additional capacity to the Canadian Maritimes provinces sourced from the offshore Sable production.
This segment will provide up to 100,000 MMBtu/d to emerging markets in the region that have requested early service as well as make additional supply options available to markets in the Portland, Maine, area, increasing reliability and security of supply for the winter of 1998/99.
In October 1996, a Canadian limited partnership -- Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline, L.P. -- will be seeking National Energy Board approval to build the 345-mile Canadian segment of the Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline which runs between Country Harbour, Nova Scotia, and the U.S./Canadian border where it will interconnect with the Phase II U.S. facilities.

This picture of me was taken by my daughter as I finished this tour.
I did this tour in order to ride in Nova Scotia, but I ended up riding in all the Canadian Maritime provinces and in Quebec.
In the maritime provinces I rode almost entirely on the scenic routes while in the US I tended to ride more direct routes.

The Canadian Maritimes --- A Few Trucking Incidents by William Weatherstone
The East coast portion was from Ontario to the Maritime Provinces on the Atlantic coast.
The colour he chose was a medium blue, with a white stripe as trim.
Notorious blizzards in the winter, horrendous floods in the spring, but as always, the Maritimers were a people who took everything in stride and never left you stuck.

 DED in the Canadian Maritimes
With comprehensive Dutch elm disease management programs supported by citizens and council alike, the 'City of Stately Elms' has managed to preserve 60-70% of its elm population.
If you ask many residents of Canada’s east coast about elm trees, the response would likely take one of two forms: nostalgia or complacence.
A proposal has also been accepted to commission a series of sculptures to be created from diseased elms.

 Canadian Maritimes
Between the winter weather and the small tax base, Canada is just not able to keep all the roads in top-notch condition.
The road conditions in the Maritimes aren't something the tourist bureaus brag much about, and for good reason.
After a long, tough day of driving by waterfalls, green forests and breath-taking shorelines, you finally pull into a campground.

A couple of notes: 1) The campground on the east side of the park is Broad Cove instead of Broad Creek; 2) On the east side at the Celtic Lodge, there is a hike, the Middle Head Trail that I highly recommend.
Plan to travel from Ft Lauderdale, FL to explore Canadian Maritimes.Nova Scotia, PE Island etc.
